Raising A Kid With The Right Attitude Towards Learning

When you think about the concept behind learning, what is the first thing that strikes you? Is it Memorizing?

This is what most think learning to be. This is quite incorrect. Learning is not about revising and memorizing content and chapters, it’s about understanding the basics behind that content and enabling a process of change through experience.

Learning at Preschool Level

Now when you think about the learning of a kid (preschooler), can you force the kid to achieve the learning? Definitely not!

It’s about encouraging kids to take an interest in lessons and the learning concepts along the way automatically. It all stems from curiosity and excitement. If a concept is quite interesting, the kids want to know more. This, followed by an in-depth lesson on the concept, ensures that kids wish to learn and are hence able to achieve it. Therefore, it’s all about cultivating the young mind in order to raise the stemming desire to learn. This is the right attitude towards learning that every preschooler must possess. Let’s see how this attitude can be developed in kids.

Inculcating the Right Attitude towards Learning

If you really think about it, parents are the key to actually developing a positive attitude in kids. Though most parents let go because they think their kids are too young. But it is that stage where this attitude can be inculcated smoothly by taking care of a few factors. Once the child grows up, it’s not an option to change their mindset.

So, let us follow these steps to bring about the positive start to their learning.

Head start Into Learning

Giving a head start does not actually mean that you force them into learning very soon or take their choices and freedom of self-learning away. It is the exact opposite. There are other things like showing your love physically in your actions to make your child learn about feelings, singing and talking to the kids using gestures and expressions even if they do not understand you, playing with your kids while teaching him little things on the way. This al leads to developing a deep connection with your kids which in itself is a big encouragement to learn and explore while assuring kids that you have their back.

Early Reading

It happens with all the kids that what they probably love the most is the activity of reading story books. It could be during the play sessions, learning lessons, or even bedtime. When you read to your kids, it develops language skills in them along with inculcating a deep-rooted love for reading and writing from a young age. This also sharpens their imagination and develops innovation spark.

Physical Exercising

It is a proven fact that exercising is definitely good for young ones. Having a daily regime of physical workout in the form of outdoor sports and activities can enable strong mental connections and blood flow resulting in sharper mind and smarter outlook in future.

Importance of Effort over Outcome

It is nothing new to praise your kids when they achieve something where you throw out labels like ‘good girl’ and ‘good boy’. But after getting used to successes in simpler problems when your kid achieves a negative result, he/she may get discouraged. To ensure this does not happen, it is necessary to praise them for going through the problem-solving motion one step ahead instead of when they reach.

For example, instead of praising your kid upon reaching the top of the stairs alone, you must encourage him with positive feedback while your kid is climbing the stairs. Praise him/her for every new step he/she took that brought your kid closer to the solution.

Getting rid of the Fears

While your child may love to explore new things, he/she might develop fears that prevent them from growing more. It is necessary that parents recognize this along with the relevant staff of the respective nurseries and preschools, to ensure that the kids can be pacified timely to avoid elevating the fears.

These fears are not only related to being physically afraid but also related to moving further. Your kid might be scared of doing a difficult task due to his/her fear of not being able to complete it successfully. Parents and relevant staff can help out kids by conversing with them, understanding the reasons behind their fear and giving them alternate strategies to think positively.

Interests and Creativity

Understanding what interests your child has, is very important. If your child wants to play with cars, then you encourage their preference but ensure that there is a lesson at every step. For example, while playing with cars, you can teach your kid about the parts in the car and what are their functions. This way your kids are involved in what they like and they are learning alongside.

Additionally, exploring if your child’s interest in it creative fields like arts, music and dance, can pave the long way into mental development and critical thinking for problem-solving.

Ultimate Prize: Failure/Fall

One of the most crucial child development methodology is learning from experience. Children learn to walk after having fallen down numerous times. It is up to you to encourage them to get up and try again. With every new try the kids learn to stand up for themselves and also learn to walk on their own. Therefore, letting the students face failure can encourage them to keep going and learning what not to do to face another failure.
